2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette will be making her fourth appearance in Cincinnati. She’s lost in the first round in all three of her previous meetings in 2017, 2020 and 2021.
The world no. 25 doesn’t come into the tournament in good form either having lost her opening round match in Montreal to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.
That was her first match on hard court since her round of 16 finish in Miami. She will be looking to overcome that Montreal defeat quickly and get into a rhythm in Cincinnati. Overall, she has done well on hard courts this season. She was 3-1 at the United Cup, reached her first ever Grand Slam semifinal in Melbourne and also made it to the last eight in Merida.
She has found things difficult outside hard court this year as a result of which she has not reached a single quarterfinal since Merida in February. She did not win consecutive matches on clay, while she did that just once on grass, reaching the third round at Wimbledon. Currently, Linette is on a two-match losing streak. Li Comes Through Qualifiers
America’s An Li stunned Alize Cornet in straight sets in the second qualifying round on Sunday to reach the main draw in Cincinnati for the second time.
She had fallen in the opening round of the tournament in 2020, but will be hoping to make a good start this year after her solid qualifying round performances.
Li rallied from a set down to beat compatriot Lauren Davis 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
On Sunday, the world no. 192 was broken once by the world no. 60, while she converted 4 of 11 break points to win the one-hour-and-13-minute contest 6-3, 6-3.
Li is 0-2 at the tour level this year, while she has a 25-19 record across levels, having mostly featured in ITF tournaments.
