Frances Tiafoe v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Wawrinka has won every single time. Two of these wins came in hardcourt competitions.

Tiafoe in a Bit of a Form Rut

Since making it to the second round of the Queen’s Club competition in June, Tiafoe has struggled to advance to later stages of most of the tournaments he has featured in.

The American entered this tournament in Cincinnati on the back of four wins and four losses from his last eight matches and add the two defeats at the Hurlingham Exhibition competition and you are looking at a form rut for Tiafoe.

Which is why it was no surprise that the world number 10 struggled to make it through to the second round here, needing three sets and two and a half hours to come through.

Tiafoe was a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4 winner over Tallon Griekspoor after having squandered away two match-points in the second set. He broke Griekspoor once in the decider though and inched past him to the second round.

Wawrinka Edges Past Nakashima

Having opted to feature on clay at the end of Wimbledon, Wawrinka was playing in his first ever hardcourt encounter since the Indian Wells Masters in March when he took to court against Brandon Nakashima. And while it took him some time to get past the American youngster, Wawrinka would be rather pleased to have made it through.

The Swiss player, who had made the fourth round at the Indian Wells Open, came away a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 winner in a match lasting two hours and 33 minutes.

What was so fascinating about the encounter was that Wawrinka did not lose his serve even once in the match despite facing eight break-points. On the other hand, he needed just two breaks of serves – one in each of the first and third sets – to make it through his opponent.

Wawrinka might not start a favourite here against a player ranked 10th in the world but as far as confidence goes, he seems to be in a much better place than Tiafoe. The question is whether he can translate that into a win.

Tiafoe v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

We believe Wawrinka has the momentum to disrupt his opponent’s game here. Expecting a Wawrinka upset win.
