Kalinina had surprised a few including some of the fans when she made the final of the Italian Open earlier this year. Wins over Sofia Kenin, Madison Keys, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Veronika Kudermetova had punctuated her run before Elena Rybakina clinched the title there.
Since then, however, Kalinina has struggled to find results go her way.
In fact in the 12 matches played since then, Kalinina has won just four and defeats to some of the lower-ranked players have been specially puzzling.
More recently though, Kalinina’s losses have come at the hands of Jennifer Brady, Sloane Stephens and Ons Jabeur, which could be a mitigating factor but all of those results would have played a role in pulling her confidence down.

Bogdan Hasn’t Done Much of Note in Hardcourt Competitions
One of the reasons why Kalinina will start off a favourite in this encounter despite having struggled in recent times is because Bogdan herself much of a hardcourt player.
As a qualifier she did make the third round of the Dubai Open earlier this year but other than that her performances in hardcourt competitions have been underwhelming. In fact in the seven other tournaments that Bogdan has played on this surface this season, she hasn’t won a main draw match yet.
That includes an opening qualifier defeat to Aliasandra Sasnovich in Cincinnati last week, which was Bogdan’s first appearance in this year’s North American hardcourt swing.
