Arthur Fils v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head
Fils defeated Nakashima in their only previous meeting which came on the clay courts of Lyon earlier this year.

While this has been a season to remember in his short career so far for Fils, the 19-year-old is yet to set the stage on fire when it comes to hardcourt competitions.
But while a lot of his successes have come on clay, one must quickly add to this that Fils has done well in indoor hardcourt competitions he has played this season.
Sure, he made the finals at two of them on the Challenger circuit – winning one of them – but one must quickly add here that Fils cruised through to the semifinal of the Marseille Open and Montpellier Open as well.
And since then he has featured in clay and grass alone.
One of the reasons why Fils isn’t quite a favourite here – bet365 are offering 1/1 for his win – is he is coming off a first round loss at the Cincinnati Masters on outdoor hardcourt. Can he turn that around against an out of form Nakashima?

Nakashima Struggles for a Win over Kubler
Such have been Nakashima’s struggles this year, the only time he won back to back matches in 2023 was in the Lyon Open. Incidentally it was also the tournament in which he faced off against Arthur Fils in the semifinal in what was their first meeting and lost.
Since then, Nakashima had featured in nine tournaments coming into this one in Winston-Salem and won a sum total of three matches.
Which is also why despite coming into his opener here as a 2/5 favourite with bet365, there were a few question-marks over his chances in this one.
Nakashima did manage to come through and break a three-match losing streak but not before he was taken into the third set. And even the decider went into a tie-breaker with Nakashima overcoming a break of serve in it.
He might start off a favourite on paper but we still think he will need to do a lot to get going here.
