Second seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands ended a three match losing streak but not in the manner he would have wanted, instead the victory came after his opponent Jack Draper retired due to an injury following the first set.
After no player was broken in the first set, the world no. 25 saved three set points in the tiebreak before converting his only set point to take the set 7-6 (10-8). It was at that point when the Briton decided to quit the contest.
As a result Griekspoor got his first win since the semifinal in Washington, and he marched into the round of 16 in Winston-Salem.
It has been a good year for the Dutchman, who won titles in Pune and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and finished runner-up in Washington. Since that defeat in Washington, he had lost his first round matches in Toronto and Cincinnati. Back to winning ways he will look to find another win on Wednesday and get into some rhythm ahead of the U.S. Open.
If GGriekspoor wins on Wednesday he will reach a seventh quarterfinal in 2023.

Purcell Knock Out Kuznetsov
Max Purcell has been in fantastic form lately and he continued to impress in Winston-Salem with a second straight sets win in a row.
The 25-year-old Aussie, who broke into the top 50 for the first time in his career this week, knocked out Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4, 6-1 in just 60 minutes on Tuesday.
Purcell served 8 aces, won 81% points on his first serve, saved 1 of 2 break points and converted 4 of 8 to roll past the Russian. The win followed a 6-4, 6-1 drubbing of Marco Cecchinato in the first round.
Purcell has been in terrific form throughout the season and a 48-18 record across levels is a testament of that. Last week, he reached his maiden ATP 1000 quarterfinal in Cincinnati, only to fall to Carlos Alcaraz in a three-set thriller.
That run in Cincinnati included a top 10 win over Casper Ruud. Two weeks ago he had stunned a top 20 player in Felix Auger-Aliassime. So he has looked dangerous recently and he could pull of a surprise against Griekspoor.

Griekspoor is the second seed, but Purcell is the player in form and so this is expected to be a close contest.
