While Rinky Hijikata is a fast improving player and he made thing difficult for Coric in the second set of their second round encounter, the Croat came through in straight sets to clinch his place in the third round.
Coric needed a tick over two hours to help himself to a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Hijikata.
What was fascinating about the win was that Coric faced a whopping 14 break-points in the encounter and saved 13 of them. It was like a storm before the calm with Coric having eased through the first set with two breaks of his own.
In the second, however, Hijikata broke early and had a chance to serve for the set at 5-3 but Coric saved five set-points before grabbing the win in the ensuing tie-breaker.
This victory got Coric to 8-8 on win-loss on hardcourt surfaces and he will now start off a 1/3 favourite with bet365 to make it to the quarterfinals.

Mmoh Makes Giron Fall to Another Loss
Marcos Giron had come into the tournament on the back of successive defeats and the 6/4 (with bet365) odds underdog Mmoh relegated him to a third successive one.
What was fascinating to watch about the Mmoh win was that he was broken three times in the encounter, two of which came immediately after he had broken his opponent. He maintained the pressure though and clinched the victory in an hour and 34 minutes.
This follows a rather solid run that Mmoh has had in the American hardcourt competitions this month, having made the third round of the Washington Open and quarterfinal of the Challenger tournament in Stanford.
