Caroline Wozniacki v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
This would be their second meeting and Wozniacki has a chance to avenge the result of their only previous match in which Sakkari defeated the Dane in Wuhan in straight sets in 2017.
Wozniacki Looking for Rhythm
For a player, who till as recently as last year was in contention to regain her number one ranking she had earlier in 2018, Wozniacki has looked out of rhythm this season. As a defending champion she would have been expected to go deeper into the Australian Open but was ousted in the third round by arch-rival Maria Sharapova.
Her season-opening warm-up competition at Auckland had seen her fall to young star Bianca Andreescu and the Australian Open was followed by an opening match exit at Indian Wells Open.
The Dane finally looked to be coming into her own at the Miami Open with straight-set wins against Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Monica Niculescu but a fourth round defeat to Hsieh Su-Wei would have come as a huge shock – in four previous meetings, she had dropped just one set to Su-Wei.
Wozniacki did not have a great previous encounter at Charleston either, having needed three sets to defeat Mihaela Buzarnescu.
Sakkari Shock for Defending Champion
Much like Wozniacki, Sakkari had a run up to the third round of the Australian Open where she went down to Ash Barty and then, despite a lot of expectations from her, she has had form issues.
There have been opening round defeats at St. Petersburg, Acapulco and Indian Wells and while she finally managed to win a match at Miami, Petra Kvitova wasted no time in getting the better of her in round two.
Which is why, while her third round appearance at this tournament wasn’t entirely expected, a stunning win over the defending champion Kiki Bertens in the third round has shocked a few. Whether Sakkari can convert this into a much deeper run at Charleston remains to be seen but for now, she looks to have done enough to regain some of her lost confidence.
Wozniacki v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
We expect a fighting match which could go the distance, with Wozniacki probably winning in the end. Tough to call for us but expect a three-setter.
