Sinner and Hanfmann will be meeting for the first time in a competitive match.

He was sent packing in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters by Dusan Lajovic despite starting out a 1/10 favourite in that match but Sinner will start off his US Open campaign as one of the dark horses in the tournament.
This will be down to his performance all year but more so at the Canadian Masters earlier this month where he went on to win the title without dropping a set. Earlier he had also made it all the way to the semifinal at Wimbledon and it had taken Novak Djokovic to end his run.
Sinner’s performances in hardcourt competitions this season have given enough indication he is ready to challenge the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
That could be seen from his semifinal run at the Indian Wells Masters and his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal of the Miami Masters before he went down to Medvedev.

Hanfmann on a Four-Match Losing Streak
While Hanfmann has done his bit on clay and improved to a career-best of 45th on the ATP Rankings earlier this year, he has struggled to get going in hardcourt competitions.
Hanfmann hasn’t won a single main draw match in an ATP tournament this season while managing a couple of match victories on the Challenger circuit. He was forced to play in the qualifiers to make it to the Australian Open but has improved his rankings enough since that time to get a direct entry here.
Still, Hanfmann enters this year’s US Open on the back of successive opening losses in hardcourt tournaments.
At the Cincinnati Masters, it took Mackenzie McDonald not so long to better Hanfmann before the German fell to clay-court specialist and a 2/1 underdog Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round in Winston-Salem.
