Jessica Pegula v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

There have been 10 previous meetings between these two players starting with three on the ITF circuit in 2011 and 2012. Pegula leads 8-2, having also won their last five successive matches.

Montreal Winner Pegula Improving

Pegula’s first ever WTA 1000 competition victory had come last year on the hardcourts of Guadalajara where she routed Maria Sakkari in the final to clinch the title. It was the mark of changing fortunes for the American star from someone who was looking to threaten the top players to actually winning a big title.

This year, Pegula has already made it to two Grand Slam quarterfinals – following on from the three she had achieved last year – but more importantly, won another WTA 1000 title.

That came at the Canadian Open and making it even more special was the opponents she was faced against and defeated to clinch the victory.

Pegula overcame Cori Gauff in a tough quarterfinal match before edging past the world number one Iga Swiatek in the semis. And while others might have capitulated following back back humdingers, she raised her game even more to rout Liudmilla Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

While Pegula enters this tournament on the back of an early exit at the Cincinnati Open, she will start off as one of the dark horses here. Pegula should have no difficulties in her opener here, starting out a 1/5 favourite with bet365.

Merida Winner Giorgi Hoping to Put up a Fight

Having reached the third round at the Australian Open this year, Giorgi went on to lift the Merida Open title in February, also on hardcourt surface. Since then, however, she hasn’t done as well as she would have liked on this surface.

A first round loss at the Monterrey Open was followed by successive second round defeats in both, Indian Wells and Miami and even when she returned to feature on the North American hardcourt swing there wasn’t too much that went her way.

Giorgi managed to qualify for the Montreal Open before going down in three sets to Petra Kvitova while she failed to qualify for the Cincinnati Open, losing to Rebecca Marino.

What this means is Giorgi has now fallen down from her career-best of 36th she was at in May to her current ranking of 52nd. And she could lose a few more points here given her second round appearance last season if she doesn’t get there this time, starting out at 27/10 (with bet365) to win this.

Pegula v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Pegula should not have a lot of difficulties here but Giorgi could push her in one of the sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Pegula to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 6/5 (with bet365)
