After having made a sparkling start to the season which had helped Tiafoe break into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his career this season, the American’s form looks to have tapered off a little in more recent times.
Tiafoe has featured in three tournaments in the North American hardcourt swing in the lead-up to the US Open and almost done nothing of note.
The 10th-ranked player made the quarterfinal at the Washington Open before the erratic Dan Evans got the better of him. At the Canadian Masters, Tiafoe then lost to Milos Raonic in the very first round despite starting out a 7/20 favourite (with bet365).
And while he overcame Tallon Griekspoor at the Cincinnati Masters opener, Stan Wawrinka had no trouble beating Tiafoe in the second round.
This makes for a very under-par Tiafoe entering his home Grand Slam with a semifinal appearance last season meaning he has a lot of points to defend as well. Can he get off to a decent start?

Tien to Feature in His Second Main Draw Match
He was just 16 years old when Tien made his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard entrant at the US Open last year.
This was following Tien’s title victory at the 2022 USTA Boys 18s National Championship, getting him a wildcard to play in the main draw and ensure he had become the youngest to do since the 2005 US Open.
While he lost his opener at the hands of Miomir Kecmanovic, he pushed his more-fancied opponent to four sets.
Tien makes it back to the main draw at the US Open as a player ranked 690th in the world, thanks to a title win on the Futures circuit in June. He’s also made two other semifinals on the same circuit this season.
Can Tien, who is 19/1 to win this (with bet365) put up the kind of fight here like he had against Kecmanovic last season? Tiafoe’s struggles could make that a possibility.
Tiafoe v Tien Prediction and Tip
Tiafoe should ideally not have a lot of problems here but the unpredictable nature of his opponent could make at least one of the sets a bit of a difficulty for him.
