Stefanos Tsitsipas v Milos Raonic Head to Head

Interestingly both their previous meetings went in favour of Raonic, who defeated Tsitsipas at the 2020 Australian Open and then again that year in Cincinnati. This will be their hardcourt meeting.

Tsitsipas Struggling in Hardcourt Masters

While Tsitsipas looked to have made a solid start to his season as he won 10 matches in a row in hardcourt competitions, things have tapered off a little in recent times.

The Australian Open runner-up hasn’t had the greatest of times in ATP 1000 Masters competitions on hardcourt surfaces with his six matches spread across four tournaments resulting in a mere two wins.

That’s right, for a player ranked seventh in the world – after having fallen from his career-best ranking of third – Tsitsipas enters the US Open on the back of a second round exit at the Canadian Masters and a third round ousted in the Cincinnati Open.

This will be the first Grand Slam that Tsitsipas will enter with Mark Philippoussis joining him as the head coach, taking over the role from his father.

His first couple of weeks haven’t been as good as Tsitsipas would have liked, at least in terms of results but the Greek number one would hope he can turn things around at the US Open – it’s a tournament that Tsitsipas typically hasn’t done too well.

Tsitsipas starts off a 3/10 favourite with bet365 in this opener.

Raonic Hoping to End Career on a High

Raonic resumed playing tennis in June this year after having been out of action for most part of 2021 and all of 2022 due to a variety of issues.

He made the second round at both, the Rosmalen Open and Wimbledon and then followed it up with a third round appearance at his home Masters 1000 tournament. What made that showing at the Canadian Masters a special one was his win over the 10th-ranked Frances Tiafoe, signalling there was still some fuel left in his tank.

While Raonic has done well in hardcourt competitions in his entire career, what’s interesting to see is that he has never made past the fourth round at the US Open. This includes four such occasions when he made the round of 16 but not beyond, losing to Andy Murray, Richard Gasquet, Kei Nishikori and John Isner in the process.

Can he put up a solid battle against a player who might be ranked in the top 10 but more recently hasn’t played like one for sure.

Tsitsipas v Raonic Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas won’t have it easy and while he should still win over a best of five sets, he could face some strong resistance from Raonic here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win AND Both players to win a set: 11/10 (with bet365)
