Félix Auger-Aliassime v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players with McDonald having won a qualifier at the 2018 Miami Masters and Auger-Aliassime clinching a victory at 2022 Halle.

Auger-Aliassime 14-14 for the Season

This is the same player who turned things around in his favour after having made it to half a dozen finals and not won a single one of them before 2022. Last year Auger-Aliassime went on to clinch four titles at the highest level and finished sixth on the ATP Rankings as a result of that.

This year, things have gone kaput for the Canadian player.

Auger-Aliassime has virtually won nothing in more recent times and even his fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and the quarterfinal in Indian Wells seem like from another era. Overall, the world number 15 has fallen to 14 defeats from 28 matches but making things worse is his recent record.

He has won just of his previous six matches excluding a walkover he had to afford to Arthur Fils at the Lyon Open because of an ongoing shoulder concern.

Has Auger-Aliassime recovered from his fitness woes? Because this seems to be related and that could be the reason for his debacle so far. He is still a favourite here but only just with bet365 offering 8/11 for his win here.

McDonald Starts off from a Career-Best Ranking

Just as Auger-Aliassime is dealing with fitness concerns, there could be a question-mark over McDonald’s fitness as well with the American having had to retire from his third round match at the Cincinnati Masters.

He would have had a few days to tend to it, so that’s good news as is the fact that that McDonald enters the US Open ranked 39th in the world – his career-best ranking.

This has been thanks to McDonald’s ability to ride a wave of fallen form after having made a stellar start to the season with a second round win over an injured Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. A semifinal at the Delray Beach Open and successive wins at both, Acapulco and Miami helped his cause no end.

While McDonald lost ALL of his six matches on clay, he has come back well on grass – making the semifinal at Eastbourne – and the hardcourt swing in the US again. In fact at the Canadian Masters, McDonald registered wins over Aslan Karatsev, Andrey Rublev and Milos Raonic on his way to making it to his maiden appearance at an ATP 1000 competition.

Can he now kick things off here with an upset?

Auger-Aliassime v McDonald Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be an intriguing match-up with a winner difficult to pick. Had more information been forthcoming about McDonald’s fitness, or had he been fit, we wouldn’t have had a lot of issues picking him as a favourite against a struggling Auger-Aliassime here.

Every possibility this match will see more than three sets and possibly even five.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/11 (with bet365)
