Gael Monfils v Daniel Taro Head to Head
They played once before and Monfils won that match easily in 2019.

Monfils Back to His Winning Ways
Gael Monfils played this Toronto – Cincinnati stretch pretty well, showing himself to be capable of playing at the highest level once more. Nobody is really surprised as Monfils was always capable, but some injuries always played a part.
He’s healthy right now, which is good to see, as it was a long journey back to this stage. Wins over the likes of Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas prove him capable of going to the second week, but he’ll first need to take care of Taro.
Their previous matchup didn’t give him too many problems, but Taro is a better player right now, while Monfils is more vulnerable. It’s going to be an interesting match, no doubt.
Both like to play aggressively and attack, so expect plenty of that. If Monfils shows up properly, he’ll cruise.

Daniel Comes Through the Qualifiers
Daniel Taro had to play the qualifiers to book a spot in the main draw, but it proved no problem for the Japanese player. All of his matches featured players who are not ranked inside the top 100, so it was kind of expected of him to cruise.
Monfils is by far the biggest challenge, especially with how well the French player played at the event in the post. Taro, being aggressive, plays into Monfils’ hands as he likes to sit back and wait for his chances while his opponents hit him out of a match.
If the Japanese player manages to do that, then it’s going to be a good match for him. He’ll need something extra, though, and I’m not sure he has enough. The season has been pretty good with a 29-23 record, and his hard court record of 19-10 is also really good.
The problem is the talent difference; being aggressive sometimes won’t be enough.
Monfils v Taro Prediction and Tip
While I do think Taro can win a set, I don’t think he can win the match. Monfils has looked too good, and his record in New York is also excellent. Take him to win.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Monfils to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
- Moderate Risk Tip: Monfils to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (with bet365)
