She had started off the previous week ranked 56th in the world and with a quarterfinal appearance at the Cleveland Open in the week leading up to the US Open, Wang would have moved up a further three places.
Wang also enters this year’s US Open having never won a round at this tournament including the last season which means she has a good chance of adding a few ranking points and attempting to break into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings.
That would be much deserved too with Wang entering this competition on the back of a 23-12 win-loss record in hardcourt tournaments this season. That includes a title win on the ITF circuit but more vitally appearances in the quarterfinal of the Hobart International, semifinal in Hua Hin and the third round at the Indian Wells Open.
Having made the second round at each of the previous Grand Slams this season, Wang has a good chance of completing the set as she starts off a 1/2 favourite here with bet365.

Qualifier Volynets Lacking Consistency This Season
There have been times when Volynets has looked like a part of the top 70 or 80 players having reached the third round at the Australian Open and the semifinal at the Austin Open. And then there are other times in which Volynets has struggled to get going like has been the case in the lead-up to the US Open qualifiers.
The American lost seven of her eight previous main draw matches on the WTA circuit with her only win coming against the little-known Julia Riera in Bastad.
Which is also why Volynets was a second favourite in two of the qualifiers she played – against Celine Naef she had gone into the match as a 6/5 underdog with bet365, while starting out at evens (with bet365) against Erika Andreeva.
She won the first in straight sets and while she was taken to three by Andreeva, Volynets made it through to the main draw after having stumbled out of the qualifiers here last year.
