Hugo Dellien v Borna Gojo Head to Head

The pair have  never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 30 year old Bolivian, and the Croat, who is five years younger.

Dellien Much Prefers Clay

Dellien is primarily regarded as a clay court player.

He won his ninth Challenger title of his career on the surface in Santiago in March.

Given that, it is perhaps surprising that he has never been further than the second round of the French Open, although that remains the highwater mark in Grand Slams as far as he is concerned.

It also represents the furthest he has been at the US Open, which came back in 2019.

Nor has he put himself in a good position to improve on that, by sticking to clay rather than practice on American hard courts.

Beaten in the first round in both Bastad and Hamburg, he was then the beaten finalist in a Challenger tournament in Germany.

His last match in the Dominican Republic, also on clay, ended in defeat.

Gojo Makes It Through the Qualifiers

This is the second successive Grand Slam that Gojo has qualified for, having previously done so at Wimbledon, although he subsequently lost in the first round.

Although this be will his first time playing in front of the New York crowds, having reached both the semi-finals and finals of the Davis Cup with Croatia, he should be used to the big occasion.

Twice he has made finals on the Challenger tour this year, finishing runner-up in Mexico in February, and in Spain in April.

The only time, though, he has won matches on the main tour in 2023 was right at the start of the year when he was competing in the United Cup in Australia.

However, he has earned his shot against Dellien by beating the Serb Hamad Medjedovic in three sets, and then both the Bulgarian Adrian Andreev, and the Czech, Tomas Machac, in straight sets, in the qualifying competition.

Dellien v Gojo Prediction and Tip

Although Dellien is the more experienced of the two, his preference is for clay, and his decision not to enter any hard court events in the build-up to this tournament suggests that he mentally may have already written off his chances.

Gojo will never have a better opportunity of reaching the second round in New York.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Gojo to win: 5/7 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 31.5 games in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
