After a brilliant 2020 season, when she won the Australian Open and finished runner-up at Roland Garros, Sofia Kenin saw a dip in form over the last two years. Injuries and ailments made things worse as she fell out of the top 300.
This year, the 24-year-old has manage to play 32 matches so far and is 17-15 across levels. She was at her best came in her last tournament in Wimbledon, when playing as a qualifier she knocked out seventh seed Coco Gauff in a three-set contest in the first round. Kenin then won her second round match to reach the round of 32 for the first time in the grass court major. She was stopped from progressing further by E;ina Svitolina.
That performance at Wimbledon was a sign that Kenin is slowly regaining the form that saw her rise to no. 4 in the rankings in 2020.
In other notable performances this season, Kenin was a semifinalist in Hobart and made it to the third rounds in Miami and Rome.
It’s her eighth appearance at the US Open. Her best was a fourth round finish in 2020. Can the world no. 101 start off well this year?

Can Bogdan Deliver on Hard Court?
World no. 60 Ana Bogdan will be making her sixth appearance at the US Open. The Romanian has made it to the second round on four of her five previous appearances.
Bogdan, who has not played a lot of hard court matches in the last four years, is 5-8 on the surface this year. Most recently, she fell in the first qualifying round in Cincinnati and in the first round in Cleveland.
Most of Bogdan’s success have come on clay and grass this season. Her best performance of the year, saw her successfully defend the WTA 125 Iași Open title on clay.
Can the 30-year-old get through the first round?

Kenin will hold the edge on hard court. But she will be playing for the first time since her Wimbledon exit, so maybe a tad rusty. But eventually the American should come out on top against the Romanian.
