Williams Into Her 24th Year at Flushing Meadows

Forty-three-year-old Venus Williams is back for a staggering 24th appearance at the U.S. Open.

Williams had won the title in 2000 and 2001 and was a finalist in 1997 and 2002. While she has seen a decline in form over the last few years, she still remains highly competitive on the scene.

This year, the seven-time Grand Slam champion and nine-time runner-up, brings a 3-6 record into the tournament.

Of the three wins, she beat Katie Volynets in the first round in Auckland; Camila Giorgi in the opening round in Birmingham and Veronika Kudermetova in the first round in Cincinnati.

That win over world no. 16 Kudermetova is a proof that she can still be a dangerous player on her day. She followed that up by overpowering Qinwen Zheng in the first set in the second round in Cincinnati, but despite taking the first set 6-1, she was beaten by the Chinese over the next two sets.

Williams will be eager to reach the second round in the tournament for the 22nd time in her career. Only twice has she fallen in the first round and they were in her last two appearances in 2020 and 2022.

Venus is 271-84 in Grand Slam tennis. Can she improve that further with a win on Tuesday?

Minnen Ousts Scott to Qualify

World no. 97 Greet Minnen qualified for the main draw with a three-set win over Katrina Scott of the USA.

The Belgian served 10 aces, saved 6 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 16 to win the two-hour-and-19-minute third qualifying round 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Minnen had beaten Zeynep Sonmez 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and Sinja Kraus 7-5, 6-3 in the second qualifying round.

The 26-year-old is 49-15 across levels this season and 7-1 from her last eight matches, which includes a runner-up finish at the WTA 125 Kozerki Open and the three qualifying rounds. Additionally she was also a finalist in the Saint Malo Challenger and has won two ITF titles from four finals this year.

Can Minnen carry her qualifying round momentum into the main draw?

Williams v Minnen Prediction and Tip

Given Williams’ stature ad how well she has played over the years, fans will be rallying behind her, but realistically she may find it tough to go past the opener. Minnen is in good form and has played a lot of tennis this year. She may edge out the veteran in the opener.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Minnen to win: 2/3 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 3/5 (with bet365)
