Not known for his performances in hardcourt competitions, Jarry looked to have been doing decently this season when he first came through the qualifiers to reach the second round at the Australian Open and then made the quarterfinals of the Los Cabos Open.
He did well to overturn a one-set deficit against Roman Safiullin before reaching the second round of the Cincinnati Masters more recently.
Jarry, however, was forced to withdraw from that match as he travelled back to his country for the birth of his second child.
What this means is that he has had a couple of flights he has had to take to get back to the US for this year’s final major. Also, Jarry makes the tournament on the back of a big event in his personal life which could have a bearing on how he goes about his preparation and the actual match.
While Jarry starts off a 9/20 favourite (with bet365), he could face a tough opening test against a 19-year-old who is slowly rising up the ranks.

Van Assche at Career-Best Ranking
He is just 19 years of age and Van Assche has already hit a career-best ranking of 64th in the world.
That has been down to his performances on clay though with the Frenchman having won a title on the Challenger circuit recently. Last year too he had won a couple of them on clay – a Futures event and a Challenger tournament – but more importantly, Van Assche has shown he is no mug when it comes to the quicker hardcourt surfaces.
Indoors, he has an 8-4 win-loss record for the season including a Challenger tournament win and while he had done nothing of note outdoors on hardcourt, he recently won a round at the Winston-Salem.
All of this gives him some hope but will that be enough on his US Open debut as he starts off a 7/4 (with bet365) underdog in this one.

Jarry might be slightly undercooked here but we think he should be able to still come through and win it. Could be a scrappy affair though.
