Lucky Loser Duckworth

By rights, Duckworth should have packed his bags and left New York by now,’

He was beaten in the third round of qualifying by Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan, losing in straight sets.

However, the withdrawal of Kei Nishikori from the tournament opened up a spot, and the Australian was fortunate to be selected as a Lucky Loser.

Not that he has a Grand Slam record to be proud of – he has never been beyond the second round of any of them, the stage he reached in New York in 2016, and again last year.

He has reached three Challenger finals this year, all of them on hard courts, but was runner-up on every occasion.

His last main draw appearance was Atlanta, where he came through qualifying before losing his first round match to Lloyd Harris of South Africa.

Alves Creates Another New York Memory for Himself

Like most South American players, Alves was brought up on clay, and it is the surface on which he has enjoyed almost all of his success on the junior tours, including winning a Challenger title in Romania last year.

Meanwhile, it is doubles that he has made his mark on the senior tour, winning in Cordoba in 2021 and Chile the following year.

New York has a special association for him – back in 2016 he won the boys’ doubles title here.

And now he can add to that the memory of it being the place where he qualified for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

He was forced to come from behind to beat Dalibor Svrcina of the Czech Republic, before seeing off the challenge of the experienced Argentine, Facundo Bagnis in straight sets.

And he again showed his liking for playing, and beating, Argentine opposition, by defeating the world 91, Frederic Coria in three sets, to create a piece of personal history for himself.

Duckworth v Alves Prediction and Tip

Although Duckworth needed the fortune of a Lucky Loser spot to earn his place in the main draw, he has vastly more Grand Slam experience than the Brazilian, who will be making his debut at this level.

The Australian should be able to use that to his advantage.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Duckworth to win: 7/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 35.5 games in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
