Tommy Paul v Roman Safiullin Head to Head
Safiullin had beaten Paul in the 2023 Madrid Masters in their second round match in straight sets.

Going up against a player who is currently ranked 233rd in the world and was a whopping 10/1 to win their encounter, Paul was expected to coast to a victory.
Or for the most part it looked like that too with Paul breaking Stefano Travaglia five times in the first two sets on his way to what looked like a straightforward win.
And while Paul lost his serve in the very first game of the third set, he broke right back to level things out and push it to 4-4. At that stage, a serious lack of focus meant that Paul dropped his serve yet again and then lost the next game too to see the set slip away against the run of play.
Paul ensured there were no major turnarounds from that point onward as he overcame a break of serve in the fourth set to overcome his opponent’s serve three times and clinch a four-set win.
This follows a Canadian Masters semifinal appearance after Paul had also made the semifinal at the Australian Open earlier this year. He should start a heavy favourite here (1/3 with bet365) to win this.

Safiullin Routs Cecchinato
It was never going to be a contest between Safiullin and Marco Cecchinato with even bet365 offering 8/1 for the latter’s win in a best of five match outside of clay.
And that’s exactly how things turned out with Safiullin shrugging off a three-match losing streak to clinch a place in the second round in a mere hour and 21 minutes.
Safiullin broke his opponent seven times in the encounter including three times in the second and third set to come away a 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 winner over Cecchinato. And in doing so he registered his maiden win at the US Open main draw.
Having entered the competition on the back of back to back losses in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters and Winston-Salem Open, Safiullin needed this victory to regain some of his lost confidence.
He will need to do a lot better in round two now as he takes on a player ranked 14th in the world, but also one whom he had defeated earlier this year.
Paul v Safiullin Prediction and Tip
While Safiullin has gotten the better of Paul on clay before this, things might not be the same in a best of five hardcourt match. We expect Paul to win it but not before he has been taken to four or five sets.
