No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo scored his first win ever at the US Open as he rallied past American qualifier Zachary Svajda in four sets in the first round.
Cerundolo, who lost in the first round on his debut last year, needed three hours to beat the world no. 234, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
Cerundolo struck 61 winners but also made 53 unforced errors in the match. He faced as many as 11 break points, saving 8 of them. In contrast he held 18 break points and capitalised on six of them.
Ranked no. 20th in the world , Cerundolo improved to 33-21 for the season. he has already featured in two finals in 2023, winning the title in Eastbourne and finishing runner-up in Lyon.
Having got through the first round, he will be hoping to build on the start and reach the third round of a major for the third time in his career. He lost in the third round at the Australian Open this year and in the fourth round at the French Open.

Vesely Sees Off Couacaud in Five
Ever since returning to tennis after a long injury absence this season, Jiri Vesely has only competed in Challenger tournaments or the Grand Slams.
He lost in the first round at the French Open, made it to the second round at Wimbledon and now he has reached the round of 64 at the US Open.
The lefty, who was once ranked no. 35th in the world, needed three hours and 19 minutes to beat French qualifier Enzo Couacaud 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Vesely struck 23 aces to the Frenchman’s 21 and he hit 59 winners to Couacaud’s 40.
The world no. 437 saved half of the eight break points that he faced and converted 6 of 1 to move into the second round for just the third time in his 10th appearance. the ;ast five times he competed in the tournament, he had lost in the first round, so the win ended a long seven year drought for the Czech, who has two tour level titles to his name.
