Jakub Mensik v Titouan Droguet Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 17 year old Czech, and the Frenchman, who is five years his senior.

New York Dream Continues for Czech Teenager

Just qualifying for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career was a dream come true for 17 year old Mensik.

But he is entitled to pinch himself after making a winning start in New York.

His first round opponent, Gregoire Barrere of France, the world number 60, does not have a  good Grand Slam record, but he was entitled to consider himself the firm favourite to progress.

Mensik, though, had other ideas, came storming out of the gate, and was soon two breaks up in the first set. Barrere did pull one of them back, but he could not recover the other one.

Serve largely dominated the second serve, but, when Barrere broke Mensik to level the match, the Frenchman must have though the natural order of things had been restored.

Nothing could separate them in the third set, and it needed a tie-break to decide it. Barrere’s service chose that moment to desert him, and Mensik dominated it.

An early break in the fourth set was another blow to Barrere’s morale. He did have a break point to recover it next game, could not take it, and that was effectively curtains as far as his chances go.

One more break allowed Mensik to sign off in style.

Droguet Produces Major Upset

In its own way, Droguet’s appearance in the second round is even more unexpected than Mensik’s.

Like the teenager, he had qualified in New York for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, but few, and certainly not the bookmakers, gave him any chance of beating the number 18 seed, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.

However, it was Droguet who secured the only break of the first set to grab the advantage.

That seemed to spur Musetti into action, and he dominated the second set without dropping a single game.

Although Droguet broke him at the start of the third set, Musetti got it back, and, when he went on to win the tie-break, the established order seemed to have been restored, especially when the Frenchman found himself a break down in the fourth set.

Seemingly from nowhere, Droguet showed his ability to respond to adversity by winning four games in a row to claim the set and level the match.

The momentum had decisively shifted in his favour by this time, and he soon found himself two breaks up in the fifth set.

Musetti saved three match points but he could not prevent Droguet from claiming a famous victory by converting the fourth.

Mensik v Droguet Prediction and Tip

Before this tournament started, somebody could have got long odds on either of these players featuring in the main draw, let alone the second round.

That means there is no reliable form guide, so, in determining the likely winner, it is necessary to look at comparative world ranking and ages.

Droguet has the edge in both respects, but this match could go either way.
