Jelena Ostapenko v Elina Avanesyan Head to Head

Ostapenko and Avanesyan have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Ostapenko Struggles against Paolini

Despite starting out a 9/20 favourite (with bet365) in her opener against Jasmine Paolini, Ostapenko stumbled a little before making it through in three sets.

Ostapenko was coming off some underwhelming performances on the US Open Swing, having lost in the first round at the Canadian Open and the second round in Cincinnati, which made it imperative she started off with some confidence.

And for the first half hour it looked like she was doing just that when she broke Paolini twice to grab the first set.

In the second, Ostapenko’s serve wavered a bit and she dropped it twice but came back to break her opponent two times too. At 4-4, however, Ostapenko was broken yet again before Paolini served out the set to level things out,

The Latvian number one regained control in the decider, however, as she overcame Paolini’s serve on two occasions to seal her place in round two where she will start off a 2/7 favourite with bet365.

Avanesyan Sends Cornet Packing

Avanesyan needed two hours and 35 minutes in her opener but she was finally able to register her first ever win at the US Open as she sent the favourite Alize Cornet out of the competition.

In a close encounter where the two players had 30 chances to break their opponent, there was no clear winner till the 10th game of the deciding set. Cornet served to stay in the match with the previous four games having seen a break of serve.

Cornet was broken yet again as Avanesyan converted her second match-point to register a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over her French opponent. In doing so, Avanesyan had hit 14 fewer winners than her opponent but still won it thanks to Cornet’s 44 unforced errors but more so because of her ability to stave her opponent off at crucial times.

Known more for her play on clay, this was Avanesyan’s first win in a hardcourt competition this year.

She will have it a lot more difficult against Ostapenko which is why it’s no surprise she starts off a second-favourite here at 11/4 (with bet365).

Ostapenko v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko can be expected to romp to a straight-set win here despite the difficulties she faced in round one given her opponent’s preferences towards clay.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Ostapenko to win in straight sets: 5/6 (with bet365)
