Iga Swiatek v Daria Saville Head to Head

Swiatek defeated Saville in her only previous meeting that came at the 2022 Adelaide International. She won 6-3, 6-3.

Swiatek Routs Rebecca

While Rebecca Peterson wasn’t expected to do much to dent the world number one’s confidence, Swiatek did come into the tournament knowing her form hadn’t been the best in recent times.

I mean sure, the defending US Open champion had made the semifinal at both, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open but her inability to win a single WTA 1000 event this year would have been telling.

But if one thought that might affect her confidence coming into this opener, one would have been widely off the mark.

Because 59 minutes is all that Swiatek took to kick off her title defence as she raced off to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Peterson and seal her place in the second round. Swiatek faced three break-points and saved all of them even as she hit a whopping 20 winners to her opponent’s mere two.

Swiatek will now start off a huge favourite (1/40 with bet365) yet again against her Aussie wildcard opponent who herself did not spend too much time on court for her opening win.

Saville Shows Sparkle against Ngounoue

Clervie Ngounoue is at her career-best ranking of 494th in the world as a result of performances on the lower circuits and as a result she was awarded a wildcard to make her maiden Grand Slam appearance.

And Saville, while having played very little tennis this year because of ACL-related injuries, took full toll of the lack of experience of her opponent as she romped to a straight-set win over Ngounoue.

Saville was on court for an hour and 14 minutes in which she brushed off all the four break-points that she faced even as she overcame Ngounoue’s serve on five occasions. The gulf between the two players could be seen from the manner in which Ngounoue made 29 unforced errors as compared to her opponent’s 11.

Now coming up against the world number one, Saville will know she is up against the odds but what she does have going for her is her fighting spirit. The Aussie will aim to make it difficult for Swiatek despite starting out a 16/1 underdog with bet365.

Swiatek v Saville Prediction and Tip

A Swiatek win looks like a foregone conclusion but we could still see some fight in at least one of the two sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Swiatek to win AND Over 16.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
