We had a sense that this first round match between Haddad Maia and Sloane Stephens was always going to be a tough one to call and that’s exactly how it turned out to be.
Haddad Maia needed nearly three hours and was forced to save 11 break-points before clinching it 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a challenging opening encounter.
Things looked to be going Haddad Maia’s way in the first set when she broke Stephens twice to ease to a win. The second set, however, saw Stephens come back from being a break down to win it with two breaks in three service games.
In the third, there were four breaks of serves in the first six games to make it 3-3 before Haddad Maia pulled away from the pack with a break in the seventh game. There was no looking back for the Brazilian player as she served to love to win just her second match this US Open Swing.

Townsend Sends Gracheva Packing
Despite having not won a main draw match in nearly three and a half months, Townsend had gone into her first round match against Varvara Gracheva as a 7/10 favourite with bet365.
And Townsend managed to win it very easily to march into the second round of the US Open for the first time since 2019. In what turned out to be an hour and 24 minutes long contest, Townsend broke Gracheva four times in her 6-4, 6-2 win.
While both players got 59% of their first serves in, it was Townsend’s 74% of those won as compared to 55% for Gracheva that tilted the match in the American player’s favour.
Townsend now has a lot tougher second round contest against a former top-10 player but she will have some belief here after the nature of opening win.
