Rebeka Masarova v Anna Karolina Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was on the clay of Bastad last year, Masarova winning in straight sets.

Masarova Ousts the Eighth Seed

Masarova has emulated her previous best at a Grand Slam by reaching the second round, and she did it in some style by knocking out the number 8 seed, Maria Sakkari, who had reached the semi-finals in New York last year, but whose campaign this time round was over almost before it started,

In fact, it was Sakkari who achieved the first break of the match, but Masarova responded in the best possible way with two breaks of her own to claim the first set.

And then the Spaniard tightened her grip with another break midway through the second set.

From there she was able to close out the match, putting an end to the Greek’s challenge,

Sakkari later complained about the strong smell of marijuana wafting from the stands during the match, but there is no suggestion this affected the outcome.

Schmiedlova Battles Past Ukrainian

Schmiedlova’s best performance in this tournament was back in 2015 when she reached the third round, but she is one step closer to emulating that achievement after a fighting display against the Ukraine world number 63, Kateryna Baindl.

The match began with the pair swapping service breaks, but settled down and seemed headed for a tie-break only for Baindl to drop her serve again at the worst time.

Both women had break chances in the second set, but it was Schmiedlova who cracked first and dropped her serve. Baindl then broke her again for good measure.

The third set proved to be a tense affair.

Schmiedlova got her nose in front by breaking Baindl at the fourth time of asking, but then had to save three break points against her in the next service game.

Another break, though, gave her a cushion, which she needed, because Baindl did finally get one of the dropped service games back.

The Slovak was glad finally to put the match to bed.

Masarova v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

Although Schmiedlova is the higher ranked player, she struggled past the Ukrainian, whilst Maserova was ousting the eighth seed. If the Spaniard can show the same form as she demonstrated against the Greek, she will be the heavy favourite to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Masarova to win: 7/15 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 6/5 (with bet365)
