For the second straight year Marie Bouzkova has made it to the second round of the US Open. The 25-year-old, who had lost her opening round matches in her first four attempts, had fallen in the round of 64 last year.
But this year the 31st seed will aim to build on the start she got against Ashlyn Krueger in round 1.
Bouzkova came back from a break down twice in the first set and then saved seven break points in a 13-deuce eighth game to stay on serve. She eventually got a third break late in the set which proved to be decisive in the opening set.
In the second set, Bouzkova saw an early break wiped off in the eighth game, but she immediately restored the advantage in the next game, before serving out the match for a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Buzkova had a forgettable start to the season but has found form recently. Last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist made it to the round of 16 at the grass court major this year. She then reached the round of 16 in Montreal and her maiden WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Cincinnati. So she is 9-4 since the start of Cincinnati. Can she keep the form going?

Martic Eases Past Maria
World no. 37 Petra Martic eased into the second round with a straight forward win over Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the first round.
Martic did not face a single break point in the match, while she converted 5 of 10 to beat the world no. 47, 6-2, 6-1.
Martic won 85% points on the back of her first serve and struck 29 winners. She dropped just 11 points of her serve in the entire match. The dominant performance improved her season record to 24-18 across levels.
A finalist in Linz earlier this year, Martic has had an up and down season, but the convincing start will give her a lot of confidence going into the second round.
She is playing at the US Open for the 11th time. Her best in the past 10 appearances included fourth round finishes in 2019 and 2020.

Bouzkova is in fine touch at the moment, while Martci has been inconsistent in recent times. It should be a good game with Bouzkova edging through.
