Evans Eases Past Galan

We had made a mention of the kind of season that Evans has had in our preview to his first round match against Daniel Elahi Galan. As we had said, it has been a topsy-turvy season for Evans and inconsistency has been the name of the game for the Brit.

That’s exactly how one can describe his recent performances too with Evans winning the Washington Open and then losing in the first rounds at both, Toronto and Cincinnati. More vitally he went down to Gabriel Diallo and Lorenzo Musetti, not some top 10 or 20 players.

Coming into this opener on the back of those two defeats, one would have thought that Evans’ chances of getting stretched were high but as has been the case he surprised his fans by easing to a straight-set win over Galan.

Evans won 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in a match lasting two hours and 40 minutes and in one where he faced just two break-points and saved them both. On the other hand, he got past Galan’s serve on four occasions to seal his second round berth where he starts off a 2/5 favourite with bet365.

van de Zandschulp Benefits from Thompson Injury

Jordan Thompson had recently spoken about tennis being a ‘messed-up sport’ thanks to the kind of sacrifices that players outside of the top 30 or 40 had to make and the kind of mental fortitude one needed outside of the play and training itself to improve as a player.

Unfortunately for Thompson, he lasted a mere 47 minutes on court in his first round match against Botic van de Zandschulp before being forced to retire because of an unspecified fitness concern.

Van de Zandschulp was leading by a set to love at that stage when Thompson threw in the towel, allowing the Dutchman to make it to the second round in quick time.

And that could help van de Zandschulp who had come into this tournament on the back of some very poor performances and with just one match under his belt in the US Open Swing this season. He had lost to the little-known Omni Kumar in that opener at the Winston-Salem Open.

Can van de Zandschulp now shrug off the 8/5 (with bet365) to overcome Evans in this second round match?

Evans v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

We will have to back Evans here despite his consistencies because he is up against a player who is himself in a bit of a strife. We could see a fourth set though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Evans to win: 4/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Evans to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (with bet365)
