Grigor Dimitrov v Andy Murray Head to Head

There have been 11 previous meetings between these two player and Murray leads 8-3. Almost all of these matches came at a time when Murray was at his peak with their last meeting having come in 2016 in the Beijing Open final.

Murray had won their only match at the US Open in 2016 in straight sets.

Dimitrov Grabs Comeback Win against Molcan

Dimitrov was in for a long opening round match on Tuesday as he came back from two tie-breakers down to defeat Alex Molcan. He overcame Molcan 6-7 (9), 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (9) to set up his second round meeting with Murray.

In a match lasting four and 40 minutes, Dimitrov saved five set-points in the first set but eventually lost it off the sixth. And he repeated that in the second by saving a further four more before going two sets to love down off the fifth one off him.

While Dimitrov came back strongly in the third set to break Molcan thrice, it took him some time to get going in the fourth. At 5-5, however, he broke Molcan before clinching the fourth set off his third set-point to take it to the decider.

Dimitrov then missed five break-points, got broken in the sixth game but refused to give up even as Molcan served for the match at 5-3. He broke back there, saved a match-point off his own serve and then two more in the final set tie-breaker before scraping through.

Despite starting out a 4/5 favourite (with bet365) against Murray, a lot will now depend on how quickly Dimitrov recovers from this marathon match.

Murray Has No Worries against Moutet

Corentin Moutet hasn’t been having the greatest of times on the circuit and the odds of 27/10 (with bet365) for a surprise win over Murray represented those uncertainties. Murray took advantage too, and despite his own fitness concerns coming into the tournament, he clinched a straight-set win over his opponent.

In a match that ended up lasting three hours despite the straight-set nature of Murray’s win, the former world number one frittered away 20 of the 25 chances he got in the encounter. 10 of them came in the third set before Murray wrapped it up 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 to move into the second round.

This win follows Murray’s third round appearance at the Canadian Masters where he was forced to withdraw from the match because of an abdominal strain.

He missed the rest of the North American hardcourt swing before trying out his fitness at the US Open. And so far he’s held fine.

Can Murray now take advantage of his own previous record against Dimitrov and the fact that his opponent needed that much time in his opener? Murray is 1/1 (with bet365) to win this.

Dimitrov v Murray Prediction and Tip

While Dimitrov is a minor favourite, we will have to go with Murray here to use his grittiness to quell his opponent’s challenge and win it in four or five.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Murray to win: 1/1 (with bet365)
  • High Risk Tip: Murray to win AND Both players to win a set: 15/8 (with bet365)
