Germany’s Eva Lys has done well this week at the Flushing Meadows. The World No. 143 started as a qualifier and beat a few well-established names like Coco Vandeweghe and Nuria Parrizas Diaz without dropping a set. In the final qualifying match, the German beat Mccartney Kessler 6-2, 6-1.
In the opening main draw match, Lys kept the rhythm going and knocked out Robin Montogomery 6-2, 6-1. With this, she has made it the farthest in a Grand Slam so far.
Now ranked World No. 143, Eva, who is just 21 years old, is looking to better her previous season’s record of 37-19. So far, she is 20-15 with not a whole of big wins under her belt.
In recent weeks, she did reach the quarterfinal in Contrexeville and Kozerki Challengers and the final eight in WTA Hamburg. In the latter, Lys knocked out the likes of Panna Udvardy and Mayar Sherif.

Bronzetti Upsets Krejcikova
Lucia Bronzetti started her US Open journey with a brilliant win over doubles specialist and former #2 Barbora Krejcikova. In a little over two hours, the Italian won the match 6-4, 7-6(3). What got her through was a fairly disciplined game – committing 27 unforced errors to Krejcikova’s 49.
Now ranked World No. 76, the Italian had a good buildup to the Slam; she most recently played in Chicago 250, where she made it to the semifinal.
Keeping aside streaks of early-round exits, Bronzetti has had a year to be proud of; she won her first WTA title in Rabat and later was a finalist in Bad Homburg.
In addition to the finals on two distinct turfs, she took home the runner-up feat from ITF Open de Seine-et-Marne – a hard-court tournament.
All in all, Lucia has displayed a fair bit of confidence this season and given her comparatively superior pedigree, she should be feeling good about her chances with Lys.
