Jarry Serves His Way to the Second Round

In his first professional tournament since the birth of Santiago, his second child, top-ranked Chilean Nicolás Jarry wanted to secure a win against world number 64 Luca Van Assche from France, to equalize his best run in Flushing Meadows (second round in 2018).

And during the first set everything went accordingly, as he broke the 19-year-old in the sixth game, capitalizing on momentum right after Van Assche couldn’t convert a couple of break points in the previous game. He then didn’t have any problem closing out the set 6-3.

Nevertheless, Van Assche came back in the second set, where he found some return rhythm and broke Jarry for a 4-2 lead, holding his following serve games to give back the 6-3.

After this blow, the Chilean went on to display his best tennis of the match in the third set, where he broke his opponent twice in the sixth and eighth games for a dominant 6-2.

Although it seemed that the bookmakers favorite was heading to a comfortable win, Van Assche showed off his will to qualify for Jeddah’s Next Gen ATP Finals with a boost in his performance during the fourth set, as he broke and then served for the set in the tenth game but failed to send the match to a decider.

The match concluded after 3 hours and 35 minutes as Jarry prevailed later on in the tiebreak.

With this triumph, the world number 25 has won at least one main draw match in all four Grand Slams of the season for the first time in his career.

American Wildcard Cruises Past Ramos Viñolas

19-year-old Alex Michelsen probably expected to be playing college-level tournaments at this time of the year, but instead of that he’s experiencing his first ever Grand Slam main draw on account of the wildcard received from the USTA, and boy is he taking advantage of it.

His 35 winners, which propelled him to an impressive amount of six breaks of serve, proved too much to handle for Spaniard and world number 88 Albert Ramos Viñolas, who at 35 seems to have entered the twilight of his career after crashing at all four of his first-round matches in Grand Slams this season.

The wild beginning of the encounter saw a break of serve in three out of the first four games.

With Michelsen up 3-1 in the score, he convincingly commanded the pace of the match from that point on, winning the first set 6-4, the second one 6-3 after two more breaks, and despite facing a bit of adversity being 4-2 down in the third, he wrapped it all up by winning four consecutive games.

Jarry v Michelsen Prediction and Tip

Regardless of the impressive level shown by the American in his US Open debut, one can say that he was paired up with a claycourt specialist who’s been really struggling with form recently, and considering that Jarry has the weapons in his game to excel on hardcourts, combined with the lack of experience of the world number 127, you could argue that the Chilean should be heading into the third round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Jarry to win: 8/13 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
