World no. 23 Qinwen Zheng made a fantastic start at the US Open, handing Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing in the first round on Tuesday.
Zheng, who had made it to the third round of her tournament debut last year, looked in great form as she breezed past the world no. 70 in just 64 minutes.
The Chinese player dropped just eight points off her serve in the entire match; she did not face a single break point, while capitalising on six of 11 breaking chances.
The 23rd seed, who won her maiden WTA title at the Palermo Open. this season and reached the semifinals in Abu Dhabi, improved her season record to 26-16. She is 15-9 on hard courts and one more win will match her previous best at Flushing Meadows.

Kanepi Cruises Past Strýcová
World no. 133 Kaia Kanepi cruised past Barbora Strýcová in the first round on Tuesday.
Kanepi broke in the very first game of the match and held on to the lead to take the opening set. She however conceded an early break in the second set, but bounced back to clinch the one hour and 39 minute contest 6-4, 6-4.
The Estonian won 72% points on the back of her first serve and she struck 21 winners on her way to seeing off the world no. 430.
At 38, Kanepi is making her 16th main draw appearance at the US Open and only twice in her past 15 appearances has she be been beaten in the first round. The last time that happened it was in 2009. So it was the 12th consecutive time that Kanepi won her opener at Flushing Meadows.
The two-time quarterfinalist will now be looking to reach the third round for the first time since 2018. But having not competed a lot at the top level this year that might seem a tall order against the Chinese player.

Zheng is off to a flying start and has been consistent throughout the season. Expect the 20-year-old Chinese to knock out the 38-year-old Estonian.
