World no. 14 Daria Kasatkina of Russia fought back from a set down to edge past the United States’ Alycia Parks in the first round on Tuesday.
The Russian, who has been in decent touch throughout the season, needed close to two hours to battle past the world no. 42.
Kasatkina was outplayed by Parks in the opening set but she clawed her way back in the second and raced to victory in the third. Kasatkina saved 7 of 12 break points and converted 6 of 13 to win the contest 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Thanks to the win, the Russian improved her season record to 30-20. The six-time tour level champion, who was a finalist in two tournaments this year, is making her ninth US Open appearance.
A win on Thursday will take her into the third round of the tournament for the fourth time in her career.

Kenin Knocks Out Bogdan
World no. 101 Sofia Kenin moved into the second round with a straight sets win over Ana Bogdan in the opening round.
Playing for the first time since her third round finish at Wimbledon, where she beat Coco Gauff in the first round, Kenin needed an hour and 55 minutes to beat the world no. 60 in the opening round.
In what turned out to be a solid performance, the 24-year-old American rallied from 3-5 don in the first set to win it in the tiebreak.
She also conceded an early break in the second and fell 1-4 behind, before making a solid recovery and winning 5 games in a row to secure a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory.
Kenin, who was a semifinalist in Hobart and made it to the third rounds in Miami and Rome, improved her season record to 18-5 and she is 9-7 on hard courts.
It’s her eighth appearance at the US Open and she will be aiming to reach the third round for the fifth time.

Kasatkina has been a very consistent performer over the last couple of years, while Kenin has struggled with injury and form over the last two years.
Therefore, the Russian is the favourite to win this contest and progress to the next round, but she may need to work hard against a player, who is slowly looking to regain the form that saw her succeed in 2020.
