Rublev Doesn’t Have It Easy Against Monfils

It’s been a reasonable comeback for Gael Monfils after having been out of action for months because of fitness-related concerns but going up against Rublev even he would have known he would be up against it.

And while Rublev did let up for a while in their second round match, he was able to come through in four sets to make it to round three.

In a match lasting two hours and 23 minutes, Rublev shrugged off three breaks of serves to win 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to get one match closer to his last US Open’s quarterfinal appearance.

Rublev was broken once in each of the first two sets but came back immediately with a break of serve. In the third, however, Monfils got the better of his serve in the eighth game and served it out in the ninth to bring some fight into the encounter.

The Russian response was swift as he raced to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set before wrapping it up off his fourth match-point.

He is start off a 1/6 favourite (with bet365) in his third round match against a player who had won just one hardcourt match this season before the US Open.

Rinderknech Benefits from Berrettini Injury

It was a nasty fall in the second set that ended Matteo Berrettini’s stay in the tournament. The ramifications of this latest issue in a string of injuries for Berrettini will be one to look for in the future but what it also meant was that Rinderknech managed to record just his third hardcourt win of the season.

Coming into his second round match on the back of a very poor performance in hardcourt competitions, Rinderknech was a 37/10 underdog (with bet365) against Berrettini.

An hour and 44 minutes into the encounter, Rinderknech looked to have reversed some of that as he went 6-4, 5-3 ahead before the Berrettini fall and subsequent retirement ended the encounter.

Rinderknech had earlier defeated Diego Schwartzman in straight sets which he enters his third round match without having dropped a set. That looked highly improbable at the start of  the competition after the Frenchman fell to the little known Omni Kumar in first round of the Winston-Salem Open.

Rublev will be a tough opponent but a now, more confident Rinderknech could give him a fight despite being 4/1 (with bet365) to win it.

Rublev v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip

Rublev will be our pick to win this but we expect Rinerknech to put up a bit of a show here and we could see a fourth set in the process.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rublev to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/5 (with bet365)
