Caroline Garcia v Sloane Stephens Head to Head
There have been six WTA level matches and one other at the Billie Jean King Cup with Garcia leading 4-3 on head to head. The last time they faced off, however, was at the Cincinnati Open last month where Stephens had won in three sets.

Garcia’s Performances & Rankings Have Taken a Tumble
Such have been Garcia’s on-court struggles in recent times that the once fourth-ranked player this season will enter this tournament ranked 10th in the world.
Her most recent performance bore ample testimony to how things have gone for the Frenchwoman with Wang Yafan, an unheralded player outside of top 100 taking her scalp in the first round of the US Open.
Not only did Garcia lose but it looked like she was never in the encounter, winning a total of just five games in it.
And even before that defeat, Garcia had featured in Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati and Cleveland and won a total of just two matches to go with four defeats. That, for a player ranked fourth in the world till as recently as June this season, makes for very poor showing.
Garcia will now hope she can turn things around at the San Diego Open and go deeper into the competition but the manner in which things have gone for her, it seems she has some major catching up to do.
She starts off 8/11 with bet365 to win this second round match after getting an opening bye.

Stephens Crushes Mertens
Despite starting out an 11/10 underdog (bet365) against Elise Mertens in her opening round encounter, a blazing Stephens took down her opponent in double-quick time to seal off her place in the second round.
Stephens took just 73 minutes for her 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of Mertens in which she broke her opponent a whopping six times. And while she herself lost her serve on a couple of occasions, neither proved to be too difficult to surmount as Stephens came back to take the lead.
This win follows a first round exit at the US Open for Stephens where she was beaten by Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Against Garcia, Stephens will know her opponent can give her a keener fight than Mertens but at the same time is a player who is very low on confidence. She will start off also knowing she can turn things around even if she makes a slow start and that will hold her in a good stead.
Garcia v Stephens Prediction and Tip
Stephens might not start off a favourite but we believe she has a good chance of toppling the world number 10 with Garcia’s form making things difficult for her.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Stephens to win: 11/10 (with bet365)
