Beatriz Haddad Maia v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings, all of which came in hardcourt competitions and Fernandez leads 2-1. This includes a win for Fernandez as recently as in Montreal last month where she surprised her opponent in three.

Haddad Maia Hoping to Do Better on Hardcourts

Haddad Maia looked to have begun well in hardcourt competitions this season and then made the semifinal of the French Open but over recent times she has been in a struggle.

In face since having been forced to retire from her fourth round match at Wimbledon against Elena Rybakina because of fitness related concerns, Haddad Maia hasn’t done too much of note.

She returned in the hardcourt swing of North America with two second round defeats and one first round loss at the hands of Karolina Muchova at the Cincinnati Open. One of those second round losses came at the hands of Fernandez while more recently at the US Open, Haddad Maia was sent packing in straight sets by Taylor Townsend.

The Brazilian, who was in the top 10 of the rankings earlier this year, has fallen to 19th as a result and will now start off knowing she will have to rebuild her way back into form. Which is why, despite starting out a 3/5 favourite with bet365 we see this to be a far more even encounter.

Fernandez Sent Out in US Open Opener Despite Improvements

Earlier this year, Fernandez was ranked 32nd in the world. In June, however, she fell to 96th and was in a danger of not making it directly into the main draw of the US Open.

It has been her more recent performances that have given the former US Open runner-up and world number 13 some hope that she belongs in the upper echelons of the current tennis players.

What has fuelled that turnaround has been her consistent runs in tournaments – even if that’s meant she has reached the second round after starting out as a qualifier, like she did in Washington.

A third round appearance at her home WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal included wins over Peyton Stearns and Haddad Maia while more recently she made the third round at the Cleveland Open as well.

While Fernandez fell in the first round at the US Open she will have a decent chance of making a match out of this one here. She starts a 13/10 (bet365) underdog though.

Haddad Maia v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Haddad Maia might start off a favourite but Fernandez has beaten her as recently as the previous month and has the weapons to do that yet again. Going with a three-setter here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
