Djokovic Sails Past Shelton

It was an entertaining contest which lasted two hours and 42 minutes, but despite the energy and athleticism of the 20-year-old American, Novak Djokovic dominated the contest to reach a staggering 36th Grand Slam final.

Broken twice in the match, Djokovic won 84% points on the back of his first delivery, converted 5 of 14 break points and showed remarkable ball recovery skills throughout the contest to knock out the promising Shelton 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

With the win, Djokovic has now won 11 matches in a row, with the series of wins beginning in Cincinnati Open, whic he won by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

Djokovic is 24-1 in his last 25 matches. During that period he won the French Open title, finished runner-up at Wimbledon, triumphed in Cincinnati and has now reached a 10th final at the US Open. He has won the tournament thrice, while finishing runner-up on six occasions.

The Serbian, who also won the Australian Open title this year, has reached the final of all four grand slams in a calendar year for the third time in his career. Barring the clash against compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round, Djokovic has looked convincing in all his wins in the tournament so far.

He began with straight sets drubbing of Alexandre Müller and Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first two rounds; rallied from two sets down to beat Djere in the third and then cruised past the big serving Borna Gojo in the fourth round. Djokovic faced two American in the quarterfinals and semifinals and knocked both of them out in straight sets. First he scored a comprehensive 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over the ninth seed Taylor Fritz and then he held off the exuberant Shelton on Friday.

Medvedev Knocks Our Alcaraz

World no. 3 Daniil Medvedev is in scintillating form this season and on Friday, he raised his game further to knock out the defending champion and world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal of the US Open.

After his quarterfinal win over Andrey Rublev, the Russian had said he will have to play “11 out of 10” to beat Alcaraz, but after the semifinal win over the Spaniard Medvedev said, he played “12 out of 10” to win the semifinal.

Medvedev, who was beaten easily by Alcaraz in their two previous meetings this year, needed three hours and 22 minutes to beat the top seed 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and reach a third US Open final. He finished runner-up in 2019, but won his first and only major title in 2021 by beating Djokovic in the final.

Medvedev has dropped a few sets en route the final this year, but has not been stretched to five sets. He demolished Attila Balázs in straight sets in the first round, but needed four sets to hold off Aussie Christopher O’Connell in the second round. Then in the third round, he breezed past the in-form Sebastian Baez in three before needing another four-setter in the fourth round to see off another in-form player in Alex de Minaur.

Getting better with each game, Medvedev then handed Rublev a straight sets rout in the quarterfinals before knocking out the top seed on Friday.

Medvedev saved 8 of 9 break points against Alcaraz and converted 3 of 7 in teh match. He also out-aced the Spaniard 9-0, but also double faulted 10 times in the match against Alcaraz’s 0 double faults.

This will be the fifth time that Medvedev will be featuring in a Grand Slam final and it will be a third time that he will meet Djokovic in a major final. While he lost to the Serb in the Australian Open final in 2021, he beat Djokovic to lift the US Open title in the same year.

It will also be Medvedev’s seventh final of the season. The 20-time tour level champion is 5-1 in finals this year. Can he make it six?

Djokovic v Medvedev Prediction and Tip
