Friedsam Has Struggled This Season

Anna-Lena Friedsam has struggled to win matches this season. She comes into the tournament with a 7-11 season record at the tour level.

Overall the German, who will be playing in the tournament for the first time, is 24-19 across levels.

Friedsam’s best results this season saw her reach the quarterfinals in Linz and Austin. Recently, she also made it to the last eight of the WTA 125 in Contrexeville. Baring those three performances there hasn’t been a lot that she has achieved this season, with most of her wins coming in the qualifying rounds or in lower level tournaments.

A two-time tour level finalist, Friedsam will be looking to find form in Japan. She is coming off a first round defeat at the US Open, having lost to Elina Svitolina in straight sets.
