Moyuka Uchijima has received a wild card for the tournament. The Japanese player, ranked no. 173rd in the world, is 23-26 across levels this season and 9-12 on hard courts.

The 22-year-old’s best result this year was a semifinal finish in the WTA 125 in Stanford last month.

Uchijima, who also has a runner-up finish in an ITF tournament this year, has a 2-3 season record at the tour level.

After reaching only as far as the third qualifying round at the US Open, Uchijima featured in ITF Tokyo 5 last week, but went down to Jule Niemeier in the first round.

Raina Qualifies as Opponent Retires

India’s Ankita Raina reached the main draw of the Japan Open, after her second qualifying round opponent Kateryna Volodko retired from the contest after just three games in the match on Sunday.

Raina had beaten Japan’s Yuki Naito 6-3, 7-5 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.

Raina is 38-27 from all her matches this season and 28-18 on hard courts. She has two runner-up finishes and two semifinal finishes at the ITF level this year.

Her best at the tour level this year was a second round finish in Prague, where she had qualified as a lucky loser.
