Golubic Won an ITF tournament Last Week
Viktorija Golubic enters the tournament in top form, having just won an ITF event in Tokyo. The Swiss defeated Xiyu Wang in the final to lift the hard court title on Saturday.
The world no. 107 improved to 21-17 following the performance in Tokyo. That includes an 11-7 record on hard courts this year.
A former world no. 35, the 30-year-old has been off-colour this season and barring a run to the quarterfinals in Nottingham, she has had little success at the highest level this season.
This is the third time she is participating at the Japan Open and was a quarterfinalist in 2016 when the tournament was played in Tokyo. In her other appearance in 2018 (in Hiroshima) she could only reach as far as the second round.
It will be interesting to see if she can carry her last week’s form to this week’s event and make a winning start in the tournament.

Ponchet on a Four-Match Losing Streak
Taking on Golubic will be France’s Jessika Ponchet, who lifted her ninth ITF title this year by winning a hard court tournament in Mâcon in February.
She reached another ITF final in July in Spain, but finished runner-up in that tournament, which was a hard court event as well. Since losing that final in Vitoria-Gasteiz, she has lost three more matches, so Ponchet enters the tournament on the back of four consecutive defeats.
The world no. 140 has been a consistent performer in lower level tournaments this year and brings a 30-19 season record into the tournament.
It will be her fourth tour level main draw of the season. She has lost all three of her previous first round matches. Can she get her first tour level win of the season on Tuesday?
Golubic v Ponchet Prediction and Tip

- Low Risk Tip: Golubic to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
