Kalinskaya Has Had an Up-and-Down Season so Far

Anna Kalinska has played just one tournament since recovering from the injury she picked in the third round in Rome. That tournament was the US Open, where she won her opener but fell to Sorana Cirstea in the second round.

Before getting injured, Kalinskaya was in decent touch on clay, having reached the quarterfinals in Charleston and the third rounds in Madrid and Rome.

Earlier, she also reached the quarterfinals in Austin. Overall, the 24-year-old is 16-13 across levels this year.

She is 9-10 on hard courts and will be playing in the tournament for the first time.  Can she make an early impact in Osaka?

Niemeier’s Form Has Been Concerning

Taking on Kalinskaya will be world no. 136 Jule Niemeier, who has struggled for most parts of the season, but looked good in the ITF event in Tokyo last week.

The German ousted Moyuka Uchijima and Ankita Raina in the first two rounds, before falling to Kimberley Birrell in the quarterfinals.

It was just her second quarterfinal appearance of the season, with the first coming at the tour level on clay in Hamburg in July.

Niemeier, who got off to a 3-12 start from all her matches, is 16-25 across levels and 3-12 on hard courts.

The 24-year-old may continue to struggle in the first round in Osaka as she takes on a player who has displayed better form throughout the season.

Kalinskaya v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Kalinskaya’s better form, particularly on hard courts, gives her the edge in this contest. Expect the Russian to advance to the second round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kalinskaya to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
