Maria In Fine Form

World no. 48 Tatjana Maria will be looking to quickly overcome the US Open setback and recapture the form that saw her go 7-3 in August.

Maria, who lost in the first round of the final major, is 10-3 from her last 13 matches, which includes a run to the title in WTA 125 in Barranquilla. She was also a semifinalist in Warsaw and Cleveland on either side of the tournament in Barranquilla.

The 36-year-old German has been in fine touch throughout the year. She won her third WTA title by defending her singles title in Bogota this year.

Additionally, she also won an ITF title in Pune.

Overall, Maria has a 45-26 record across levels and is 21-12 on hard courts this year.

Can the 36-year-old win a first round match at the Japan Open for the first time in her third try?

Udvardy on a Six-Match Losing Streak

World no. 126 Panna Udvardy has had a torrid time this season and a 12-21 season record is a testament to that.

Udvardy last won a match in the first round in Hamburg. Since then, she has lost six matches in a row. In  addition to the second round loss in Hamburg, she made first round exits from Brasília ITF, Barranquilla, Chicago Open, the US Open and Tokyo 5 ITF.

Udvardy is 3-9 on hard courts this year. She has only had one good tournament this year, when she reached the final of the WTA 125 in La Bisbal on clay.

Can she find form in Japan and return to winning ways?
