Yulia Putintseva v Valeria Savinykh Head to Head

Putintseva and Savinykh have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Putintseva Easy Winner Over Shnaider

Having been ranked 40th in the world in February this year, Putintseva’s form and fitness have both taken a back-seat in the rest of the season and that has had its effect on her ranking.

She has now fallen to 88th on the WTA charts with an absence of form from the North American hardcourt competitions having hit her hard.

Putintseva featured in her first match on that swing at the Canadian Open where she was knocked out of the qualifiers. She still made it through as a lucky loser, won a round before falling to Jessica Pegula in the second.

Another qualifying loss followed at the Cincinnati Open before Putintseva crashed out in the first round of the US Open against Martina Trevisan despite having won the first set 6-0.

Which is not a lot was expected out of her against Diana Shnaider in her opener here but she came away a 6-2, 6-3 winner in a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes. Can she win two in two for the first time in two months overall and in seven months in a hardcourt competition.

She starts off a 2/7 favourite with bet365.

Savinykh Surprises Friedsam

Having made it to the main draw on the back of successive qualifying wins, Savinykh wasn’t quite the favourite coming into her opener against Anna-Lena Friedsam. And while she was broken three times, the same number as her opponent, Friedsam found a way to make it past her opponent.

Savinykh won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and nine minutes to seal her second round spot for the first time this season.

The former world number 99 needed just an early break of serve in the third game to grab the opening set but was then broken twice in the second as Friedsam levelled things out.

The two traded breaks in the third set before Savinykh took a 4-2 lead and while she missed five match-points in the encounter, she converted it off the sixth to romp to a shock win.

Against Putintseva, Savinykh will start off a distant second favourite though with bet365 offering 11/4 for a win.
