Panna Udvardy v Arianne Hartono Head to Head

Hartono won their only meeting in Orlando 2 earlier this year and she won that ITF match in straight sets.

Udvardy Saves Two MPs Before Stunning the Second Seed

Panna Udvardy rallied from a set down to stun the second seed and world no. 48 Tatjana Maria in the first round of the Japan Open on Tuesday.

The Hungarian, who has had a very tough year so far, saved two match points on her serve in the 12th game of the final set, before edging out the German in the final set tiebreak to register a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory in over three hours.

The win ended a six-match losing streak for Udvardy, who improved her season record to 13-21.

Udvardy, who was a finalist in the WTA 125 in La Bisbal this year, had last won a match in July in the first round in Hamburg. On Tuesday, the 24-year-old fought hard and saved 11 of 14 break points and converted 2 of 4. While she won two fewer points than Maria’s 120 in the match, she won the key moments in the final set that sealed the match for her.

The win would be a huge confidence booster for the Hungarian, who is searching for her first tour level quarterfinal of the season.

Hartono Holds Off Doi

Qualifier Arianne Hartono kept her chances in the tournament alive as she defeated Japan’s Misaki Doi in three sets on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Dutch player served 10 aces, saved 9 of 12 break points and converted 5 of 13 to defeat the world no. 329, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 24 minutes.

Hartono, who has been in tremendous form in lower level tournaments, improved her season record to 49-28 across levels.

The Dutch player had qualified for the main draw with a three set win over Sofya Lansere and a straight sets win over Despina Papamichail in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively.

Can Hartono, who has played two ITF finals this year and won one of them, reach her maiden WTA quarterfinal of the season?

Udvardy v Hartono Prediction and Tip

While Udvardy put up a gutsy performance in the first round, she will be tested in the second. Tuesday’s win was a rare one for the Hungarian this season, while Hartono has done well in lower level competitions. So Hartono will be a slight favourite going into this contest.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Hartono to win: 4/6 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
