Ashlyn Krueger continued her stunning form in the tournament as the 19-year-old American handed Anna Kalinskaya a straight sets rout in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Krueger served 11 aces on her way to a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Russian. She was not broken during the one hour and 18 minute contest, while she capitalised on 4 of 12 breaking chances.

With the win, Krueger has improved her season record to 38-22 across levels. She had begun her Osaka campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kateryna Baindl in the opening round. She then ousted France’s Jessika Ponchet 6-4, 6-1, before beating the world no. 92 in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Krueger, who won her maiden WTA 125 title at the the Veneto Open in Italy this year, was also a finalist at the Charlottesville ITF. She is aiming to reach a maiden tour level final with a win on Saturday.

Hontama Battles Past Hartono

Mai Hontama bounced back after losing the first set to beat Arianne Hartono in the quarterfinals of the Japan Women’s Open.

The world no. 176 Hontama missed out on two set points while serving for the set at 5-4. She eventual lost the opening set in the tiebreak, which was dominated by the world no. 191.

The Japanese player was broken in the very first game of the second set as well, but she clawed her way back by breaking the Dutchwoman twice. She once again missed out on two set points while serving for the set at 5-3, and was broken in the next game as Hartono sent the set back on serve. But Hontama broke for a third time in the set in the next game to send the match into the decider.

The Japanese player then dominated the final set to complete a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-1 victory.

It was the second time when Hontama needed three sets in the tournament. She had beaten Jang Su-jeong 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 in the first round before ousting Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-3 in the second round.

Hontama is 39-19 across levels this season. She won the ITF Maribor Open title in Slovenia this year and was recently a quarterfinalist in WTA 125 in Stanford.

Krueger v Hontama Prediction and Tip

Both players have done well in lower level tournaments this year. Krueger is a touch better player and a slight favourite going into this one. Expect the American to edge past the Japanese player on Saturday.
