Anhelina Kalinina v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

Kenin leads the rivalry 4-3. They have met thrice this year, with Kenin winning the hard court matches in Hobart and Miami and finishing runner-up in Rome.

Kalinina Makes Quick Work of Min

No. 12 seed Anhelina Kalinina made quick work of America’s Grace Min to reach the second round of the Guadalajara Open.

The world no. 28 Kalinina dropped just eight points on her serve in the entire match, she did not face a break point and converted 5 of 12 to win the 62 minute contest 6-2, 6-0.

The Ukrainian dropped just one service point in the second set as she ousted the qualifier.

Thanks to the win, Kalinina’s season record improved to 22-21 across levels. Kalinina has not won consecutive matches since reaching her maiden WTA 1000 final in Rome this year. That was in May.

Apart from her performances in Rome, the only other significant performances for the Ukrainian this year were a quarterfinal finish in Hobart and a run to the third round in the Melbourne major.

So consistency has been a problem for Kalinina and it will be interesting to see if she can win two in a row for the first time since May.

Kenin Off to a Good Start

Coming off a runner-up finish in San Diego, Sofia Kenin made a good start in Guadalajara as she knocked out Canada’s Carol Zhao in straight sets on Monday.

The 24-year-old, who moved up 40 places this week to no. 53 in the world, needed an hour and 23 minutes to beat the world no. 242, 6-4, 6-3.

Kenin saved 4 of 5 break points in the match and converted 4 of 10 to improve to 23-17 across levels this year.

She ended a nearly three year finals drought in San Diego last week, but the 2020 Australian Open champion could not end the title drought as she failed to win a sixth career title by going down to Barbora Krejcikova in the final.

But Kenin, who was also a semifinalist in Hobart earlier this year, has looked in great form recently and is expected to keep the rhythm going.
