Jelena Ostapenko v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

There have been two WTA and one Billie Jean King Cup matches played between these two players and Ostapenko leads 2-1.

Ostapenko won in Dubai last year, dropping just three games in the process.

Ostapenko Sends Kostyuk Packing

On a high of reaching the quarterfinal at the US Open, Ostapenko might not have had a great time at the San Diego Open last week but came back strongly in her opener here.

The Latvian number one, who has climbed to 16th in the world, got past the finishing line against Marta Kostyuk in the second round with consummate ease. She won 6-2, 6-3 in a match that lasted a mere 65 minutes.

It was Kostyuk who drew the first blood when she broke Ostapenko to go 2-1 up but from that point onward the match took a major turn.

Ostapenko broke back immediately and added a second break of serve in the very next game before wrapping up the set with a third one. Stunned, Kostyuk got to deuce just once on Ostapenko’s serve in the second set before getting broken in the sixth game there.

Soon after she had served out the match to advance to the third round having earlier received a first round bye. Against Kenin, Ostapenko starts off a 1/2 favourite (at bet365).

Kenin Tames Kalinina

With Anhelina Kalinina having struggled for form in recent times there were no surprises in the lead-up to her second round match as Kenin started off a 7/10 favourite. And Kenin lived up to those expectations as well as she carved out a straight-set win to reach the third.

Kenin, who had had no problems in getting past Carol Zhao in her previous match, overcame a spirited fight in the second set from Kalinina to win 6-2, 7-6 (5).

The first set was a bit of a cakewalk for Kenin who broke her opponent three times there but when she fell 2-5 behind in the second, it seemed like things could get really interesting.

Kenin went on to save a set-point in each of the following three games, pushing the set into a tie-breaker before winning it.

This performance follows a finals appearance at the San Diego Open last week for Kenin and she might not be much of a second favourite here despite what odds of 13/8 (with bet365) seem to suggest.

Ostapenko v Kenin Prediction and Tip

While Ostapenko is a favourite here, we believe Kenin has a definite chance here with the match expected to go either way. Three-setter could be an option.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
