Jan-Lennard Struff v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. These came at the 2019 Paris Masters where Struff won in three before Nishioka made it 1-1 in Cologne in 2020.

Struff Needs Three Sets against Garin

Since getting out in the second round of the Halle Open, Struff hadn’t taken to court for any kind of competitive tennis. It was thanks to a hip injury that Struff, a Madrid Masters and Stuttgart Open finalist, was forced to take a three-month break.

Which is also why coming up against a clay court specialist and out of form Cristian Garin, Struff wasn’t quite the favourite in his second round.

Following a first round bye though, Struff managed to get past Garin 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to make it to the last eight stage. The world number 23 needed over two hours of court time and dropped his serve three times in the encounter before coming through.

It was Struff’s serving in the decider which proved to be the difference with the German breaking Garin in the very first game and then losing just seven points in the entire set off his own serve.

Interestingly though, Struff now starts off a second favourite at 6/5 (with bet365).

Nishioka Edges Past Harris

After having lost the first set he played in this tournament to a 6-0 scoreline, Nishioka had gone on ease past Terence Atmane in his opener.

In his second round encounter, Nishioka had started off a 1/1 underdog with bet365 and was pushed all the way but still managed to carve out a two-set win. Both the sets went into a tie-breaker.

It turned out to be cagey second round encounter with a total of just one break-point on offer for either player. It wasn’t taken and in the first tie-breaker that followed Nishioka went on to grab a 4-1 lead.

In the second, he was 3-4 behind in the tie-breaker at one stage but turned the tables around to clinch it 7-5 and grab his second successive win for the first time in nearly four months.

Can Nishioka live up to his 4/6 winning odds with bet365?

Struff v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Struff would have been a favourite here had he not been out of action for a while but we think he won’t let Nishioka have it all go his way. We could see a tight battle that ends up in the third set.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
  • High Risk Tip: Nishioka to win in three sets: 5/6 (with bet365)
