Ons Jabeur v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

The pair have met three times before.

Zvonareva won their first match at the Australian Open in 2015, but the two subsequent meetings, in Bucharest in 2018, and in Dubai last year, both went the way of Jabeur.

Jabeur Chasing Another Title

Jabeur is chasing what would be her fifth WTA title of her career in Ningbo, and the second of the year, having also enjoyed success on the clay of Charleston. She, though, has had to swallow the disappointment of being the beaten Wimbledon finalist for the second successive year.

Nor could Jabeur emulate her 2022 feat of reaching the US Open final, going out at the fourth round stage this time.

Perhaps as a hangover from that she struggled in her next two tournaments in San Jose, and Guadalajara, but now seems to have recovered some of her swagger.

In the first round, Jabeur overcame a difficult first set which she needed a tie-break to clinch before beating the Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the first round.

And then she proved too strong for the German Tamara Korpatsch, the world number 107, with two breaks of serve in each set enough to get the job done for the Tunisian.

Zvonareva Defying Her Age

Zvonareva is living proof that the top players can still perform, no matter how old they are, or, in her case, how little they play on the senior tour.

The 39 year old had already caused one upset in Ningbo by knocking out the number seven seed, Katie Boulter of Great Britain, defeating here in three sets, despite conceding 12 years in age to the younger woman.

Her next opponent, Clara Tauson is even younger, with 19 years separating the pair.

The Dane had suffered an unfortunate injury in Guangzhou last week, collapsing before leaving the court in a wheelchair, but she had recovered in time to take part in this tournament, and had beaten the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round.

Zvonareva came under early pressure from Tauson, and had already saved several break points, when, slightly against the odds, she claimed the first break of the match. And, although she was immediately broken herself, she managed to break again and claim the firstav set.

The second set began with a Zvonareva hold, at which point Tuason called for the trainer. Fearing a recurrence of the injury problem, she wisely retired, and Zvonerava was through to the quarter-finals.

Jabeur v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

Everything points to a Jabeur victory in this match. She is ranked more than 500 places higher than her opponent and is ten years younger than her.

At her age, it is a lot to expect of Zvonareva to play three WTA matches in successive days, but she should not be underestimated nevertheless.
