Kudermetova Takes Down Swiatek

World no. 19 Veronika Kudermetova reached the semifinals in Tokyo following a straight sets win over top seed Iga Swiatek.

The Russian was off to a flying start building a 4-0 lead before taking the first set 6-2. Swiatek bounced back with a double break in the second. However, there was just one break in the final set and that fell to Kudermetova, who broke Swiatek in a four deuce third game.

Eventually Kudermetova ousted the world no. 2 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 23 minutes.

With the win the Russian is into her second straight semifinal in Tokyo. Last year, she was stopped from reaching the final by Qinwen Zheng.

Kudermetova, who defeated Harriet Dart in the first round and Kayla Day in the second, is into the semifinals for the sixth time this season.

A one-time tour level champion will be aiming to reach her seventh final and a second of this season. She was runner-up to Ekaterina Alexandrova in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Pavlyuchenkova Knocks Out Alexandrova

2017 and 2019 finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova closed in on another final at the Pan Pacific Open as she knocked out fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Ranked no. 86th in the world, Pavlyuchenkova saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 4 of 5 to beat the world no. 21, 6-2, 7-5 and advance to the semifinal.

The 32-year-old former world no. 11 had beaten Donna Vekić 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Linda Nosková 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in the second round.

With the two wins she is now 22-14 across levels this season. The 2021 French Open finalist is a 12-time tour level champion from 21 finals, but has not reached a final since finishing runner-up in Roland Garros in her only major final.

This year she finished runner-up at a WTA 125 in Contrexeville. She will be aiming to reach her third Pan Pacific final on Saturday. She was beaten by Caroline Wiozniacki in 2017 and by Naomi Osaka in 2019, the only time when the tournament was played in Osaaka.

Kudermetova v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova has displayed better form this season. She is coming off a win over the top seed and world no. 2 and therefore holds slight edge in this contest. Pavlyuchenkova is also playing well in the tournament and she won’t allow the eighth seed an easy win. Three sets expected with Kudermetova edging through.
